Internet of Things is the future. The futuristic technology is already being used to solve some of the most pressing problems faced by the human civilization. According to a report, by 2050, the population aged over 65 in the US will be over 83.7 million. With age come problems like vision loss, deafness and dumbness. IBM is now partnering with a famous organization, Guiding Eyes, to train puppies to help the blind and deaf. This will help millions of blind and deaf people in the country and worldwide.
IBM and Guiding Eyes are using Watson Cloud platform along with several Internet of Things features to understand the psychology and behavior of dogs before making them eligible to become guiding eyes for blind people. IBM Watson has so far analyzed over 500,000 medical records and 65,000 records about dog characteristics, temperaments, behavior to find out the necessary patterns for a predictable system. Out of these thousands of records, IBM system was able to narrow down a sample to 105 dogs. IBM Internet of Things system was able to predict with a whopping 100% accuracy which dogs are fit to become a guide for blind people.
IBM is providing a cutting edge IoT technology to Guiding Eyes in order to find out the stress level factors in dogs. Stress level is dog is the most complex characteristic to find as it depends upon a plethora of factors. Without any predictability of a dog’s stress and how it behaves in tense situations, it is not possible for Guiding Eyes to ensure safety and optimal performance for the deaf and blind. IBM is working with North Carolina State University and using wearable devices to solve this problem. These devices equipped with sensors to measure behavior and heart rate levels of puppies. This data is sent back to the Watson cloud which makes sense of all this and comes up with a pattern. This Internet of Things technology is also being used for effective breeding, raising and training for the puppies to become guide dogs.
IBM Watson is solving one of the biggest problems in the US. Aging population and physical disabilities are becoming a big liability for the economy which could only be solved using the latest technology. Watson is using the perfect amalgamation of IoT and cognitive computing to help Guiding Eyes come up with the best possible practices for human-dog communicating. The best thing about this system is that Watson will keep learning from the behavior of dogs which wear IoT-based wearable devices. This constant learning will help Guiding Eyes to improve its performance.
IBM Internet of Things system will drastically reduce the costs involved in training guide dogs. According to Guiding Eyes, it costs around $50,000 to train a guide dog. IBM Watson will help slash this cost by automating most the evaluation and training process.
